Aquilino ‘ Kiko’ Pimentel III, a virtual unknown on the world political stage, is poised to become the next President of the Philippines. Not Vice President Leni Robredo.
Let me explain.
The Philippine Constitution provides for the line of succession in the event that the incumbent president dies, is incapacitated or is removed from office. So why not the second in line, the Vice President?
Well, both President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo are facing impeachment charges, so if both are removed from office, it is the next in line who becomes president. That’s Senate President Pimentel.
But there is an added scenario.
If the Philippine Supreme Court decides in favor of Ferdinand (Bongbong) Marcos, Jr. in his electoral protest against Robredo, then he becomes president should Duterte be impeached.
There’s a reason for the Department of Tourism’s popular meme, “It’s More Fun in the Philippines.”
